Singh not 'anxious' to launch election, says his top adviser

Jagmeet Singh's top adviser has stated that the NDP leader is not particularly eager to trigger an election. However, Anne McGrath, Singh's principal secretary, notes that while Singh is not actively seeking an early election, the likelihood of one has increased due to the expected volatility in Parliament.

"I don't think he is anxious to launch one, or chomping at the bit to have one, but it can happen," McGrath said.

New Democrat MPs are currently in Montreal for a second day of meetings to finalize their strategy for navigating the minority Parliament this fall.

This caucus retreat follows Singh's announcement that the party has ended its supply-and-confidence agreement with the Liberals.

Although the New Democrats aim to distance themselves from the Liberals, they do not seem poised to trigger an election by voting non-confidence in the government at this time.

Singh has emphasized that his party will evaluate each vote individually and will expect the government to introduce legislation beneficial to Canadians.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has challenged the NDP to trigger an election, describing the departure from the supply-and-confidence agreement as a "stunt."

The NDP has largely ignored the Conservatives' provocations.

Singh indicated on Tuesday that he will provide more details about the party's strategy for the upcoming parliamentary session on Wednesday. He hopes to demonstrate to Canadians that his party can successfully oppose the federal Conservatives, who have been leading in the polls over the past year.

As Parliament reconvenes, the NDP is also considering how other parties will react to the new composition of the House of Commons.

The Bloc Québécois has already prepared a list of demands for the Liberals in exchange for their support on votes.

The next federal election is required to be held by October 2025 at the latest.
