Six men facing multiple charges in connection with Montreal-area vehicle theft ring
"The investigation began with information about vehicle thefts at Montreal airport," the release reads. "However, the network was active throughout the island of Montreal."
Six men are facing multiple charges related to a vehicle theft ring operating in the Montreal area, which began at the airport.
According to a news release from the Montreal police (SPVM) on Thursday, the investigation started in May and resulted in the seizure of 19 vehicles.
Two of the suspects were already in custody on unrelated charges, the SPVM noted.
"The investigation was initiated based on information regarding vehicle thefts at Montreal airport," the release stated. "However, the network was active across the entire island of Montreal."
Police reported that around 30 vehicles, including Toyota, Lexus, and Jeep models, were targeted, with an estimated market value of approximately $2.3 million.
The individuals charged are Akym Petioth-Germain, Mario Sarmientos Valle, Antenin Lubin Touon, Amine Ainouz, Lucas Deymos, and Gabriel Kafando. They face multiple charges, including theft and trafficking of stolen vehicles, conspiracy, and breach of conditions.
Police also noted a 30 percent decrease in vehicle thefts during the first half of 2024, with 4,917 vehicles reported stolen compared to 6,914 during the same period in 2023.
