An additional eleven firefighters from New Brunswick have joined the Wabanaki team, and they will be working in Alberta for a two-week period.
A team of firefighters from three First Nations in New Brunswick has been deployed to assist with wildfire efforts in Alberta.
The 10-member team, known as the Wabanaki Wildland Crew, includes individuals from the Neqotkuk, Natoaganeg, and Sitansisk First Nations. They departed for Western Canada last week.
According to a news release from the New Brunswick government, 20 Indigenous firefighters from across the province were certified earlier this year for wildfire management. Prior to the crew’s deployment to Alberta, a special ceremony was held to honor the team and pay tribute to John Eric Paul of Sitansisk First Nation, who recently passed away in an accident.
