Train derails in Longueuil, Que., raising concerns about possible chemical spill

A freight train derailed in Longueuil on Thursday morning, raising concerns about a possible chemical spill.

At around 9:30 a.m., a police spokesperson confirmed that officers were on-site near the intersection of Saint-Georges and Saint-Louis Streets, where several train containers had gone off the rails. Firefighters and Canadian National personnel were also present.

The spokesperson explained that a large security perimeter had been set up around the area and urged the public to avoid the scene while tests were being conducted to assess whether any hazardous chemicals had been released.

A video from the location showed a cloud of white smoke emerging from the freight containers, with firefighters spraying water onto the affected area. Although the train remained upright, several containers were visibly tilted and off the track.

No injuries were reported, and police stated that access to Highway 116 in both directions was blocked in the vicinity.
