Trudeau Faces Pressure from Liberal MPs to Resign but Says He Will Stay On
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to respond Monday to a group of Liberal MPs urging him to step down as party leader. However, Trudeau has already made his intentions clear.
At a Liberal caucus meeting on Wednesday, 24 MPs presented a letter calling for Trudeau’s resignation and gave him until Monday to reply.
The next day, Trudeau told reporters he has no intention of leaving his position, stating that he plans to remain at the helm of the party.
What the dissenting MPs will do next remains uncertain. Most of them have stayed anonymous, and one MP indicated he’s “moving on,” suggesting no immediate follow-up actions.
Meanwhile, Trudeau’s minority government faces another challenge on Tuesday, with a deadline from the Bloc Québécois to pass two key bills—one to increase old-age security payments for seniors and the other to strengthen supply management policies.
Bloc Leader Yves-François Blanchet has warned that if the Liberals fail to meet the deadline, his party will begin talks with other opposition parties to explore options for toppling the government.
