Trudeau testifying as foreign interference inquiry wraps latest phase of its work
PM's latest testimony comes days after Canada expelled 6 Indian diplomats
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is testifying today as a federal inquiry into foreign interference concludes the latest phase of its work.
The inquiry is examining how well Canadian institutions detect and counteract meddling by hostile states.
Over the past several weeks, the commission has heard from senior bureaucrats, police and intelligence officials, cabinet ministers, and members of diaspora communities.
Trudeau’s appearance marks his return to the inquiry after first testifying in April during its initial phase, which focused on allegations of interference in the last two general elections.
This testimony comes shortly after Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, with India retaliating by expelling Canadian diplomats.
The inquiry will hold five days of policy consultation sessions starting next Monday to develop recommendations, with the final report expected by the end of the year.
Trudeau’s testimony began at 9:30 a.m. and is scheduled to continue until nearly 3 p.m.
