Justin Trudeau is focusing on the crises in Haiti as he meets with world leaders ahead of the 78th United Nations General Assembly.
He is scheduled to speak with Haiti’s acting Prime Minister Garry Conille, who took office amidst significant unrest and gang violence in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Trudeau is also expected to emphasize Canada’s support for Haitian-led solutions to the ongoing humanitarian and security issues.
In New York, Trudeau participated in the Summit of the Future, where he urged leaders to confront global challenges and introduced the “Pact of the Future,” a plan aimed at reforming the UN and addressing modern crises.
This pact, which faced opposition from countries like Russia and Saudi Arabia, was approved by the UN General Assembly, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed optimism about the outcome.
Later, Trudeau will appear on CBS's "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert."
He will also meet with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai and attend a working luncheon hosted by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, who is accompanying Trudeau, will deliver Canada’s national statement at the UN, highlighting the country's commitment to multilateral cooperation, human rights, and democracy.
She is set to participate in discussions on child protection, especially regarding the unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia, and will co-host a panel on media freedom.
