Up to 10 cm of snow anticipated in Calgary
This weather is likely to affect traffic, and drivers are urged to prepare for potentially challenging road conditions.
Calgary is experiencing its first significant taste of winter this Monday, with snow covering the city.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the city is currently under a snowfall warning, with approximately 10 centimeters expected to accumulate.
ECCC meteorologist Ron Mark noted that this is just the start.
“We’re now moving into an arctic air mass, which means colder temperatures will linger throughout the week. Along with this chillier air, there’s a high chance of intermittent snow and flurries continuing for the next several days,” Mark explained.
The most intense snowfall is expected to occur in the morning before gradually easing in the afternoon.
This weather is likely to affect traffic, and drivers are urged to prepare for potentially challenging road conditions.
“The timing of this snowfall suggests that morning commuters will likely face a tricky drive,” Mark added.
Chris McGeachy from the city's roads department shared that crews were prepared after receiving the forecast and started clearing roads overnight.
Calgary follows a prioritized snow removal strategy, focusing on the busiest roads first.
“Our teams are currently out plowing and treating major routes — such as Crowchild Trail and Glenmore Trail — and will continue focusing on these high-traffic areas as long as the snow continues,” McGeachy stated.
As winter driving returns, McGeachy emphasized some important reminders:
“We just want drivers to take it slow, allow extra travel time, keep a safe distance between vehicles, and ensure that snow is fully cleared off your car before hitting the road.”
