B.C. Health Officials Urge Residents to Get Updated COVID-19 and Flu Vaccines
B.C. health officials are encouraging everyone to get the latest flu and COVID-19 vaccines this season to protect against respiratory illnesses.
“This is the time of year when we see increases in viral respiratory illnesses in B.C., including influenza and COVID-19, so it is particularly important to remember healthy habits we can all follow to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer, at a press conference on Tuesday.
She emphasized preventive measures such as covering coughs, washing hands regularly, staying home if experiencing a cough or fever, wearing a mask when symptoms linger or extra protection is needed, and getting the updated vaccines.
Those registered with the Get Vaccinated program will receive notifications to book appointments, and both flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be administered together.
Health Canada has approved new mRNA vaccines targeting the KP.2 COVID-19 subvariant for individuals six months and older.
On October 15, 2024, the province set a new record for vaccinations, with pharmacies administering 81,859 doses in a single day.
Vaccines are available at over 1,300 participating pharmacies, health-authority clinics, and select primary-care offices. People can call 1-833-838-2323 for assistance with booking. Both flu and COVID-19 vaccines are free.
The announcement follows a warning from the BC Centre for Disease Control about rising COVID-19 activity. Wastewater testing shows increasing COVID-19 levels in the Fraser Health, Interior Health, and Northern Health regions, though seasonal flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases remain low.
Everyone aged six months and older is eligible for the free vaccines, which can be booked online or by phone.
