Vancouver Island MLA Mitzi Dean withdrawing from upcoming B.C. election
She says “personal challenges” over the last year have affected her health, and says dropping out of the running was “one of the most difficult decisions” of her life.
British Columbia’s Minister of State for Child Care, Mitzi Dean, has announced that she will not be running in the provincial election in October.
Dean explained that she is stepping down to prioritize her health and her family, citing "personal challenges" over the past year that have impacted her well-being. She described her decision to withdraw from the race as "one of the most difficult decisions" she has ever made.
Dean expressed gratitude towards her fellow caucus members and the constituents in her Vancouver Island riding, currently known as Esquimalt-Colwood.
Premier David Eby has voiced his support for Dean's decision, stating that he understands her reasons for not seeking re-election. He also mentioned that Dean is taking immediate leave from her ministerial duties.
In July, other ministers, including Harry Bains, Bruce Ralston, and Rob Fleming, also announced that they would not be seeking re-election when British Columbians vote on October 19.
