Wall of Kindness returns to help Montreal’s most vulnerable keep warm

“The Wall of Kindness reminds us that every action matters. When we donate a coat, we’re sharing more than simply clothing: we’re sharing warmth, humanity, and hope. I hope everyone will join in to make our community a place where everyone belongs.”

In celebration of World Kindness Day, Montrealers are once again spreading warmth and compassion through the third annual Wall of Kindness initiative, aimed at collecting winter coats for people experiencing homelessness. Organized by the non-profit Renaissance in partnership with La Maison du Père, this year’s goal is to gather 3,000 coats.

The public is encouraged to contribute by hanging coats at designated Walls of Kindness set up at four locations around Montreal: Iberville and Masson Street, Sainte-Catherine East and Bourbonnière Street, Ontario East and Saint-Timothée Street, and Saint-Viateur and Clark Street. The drive will continue until December 1st.

Éric St-Arnaud, Director of Renaissance, emphasized the deeper impact of these donations: “The Wall of Kindness reminds us that every action matters. When we donate a coat, we’re sharing more than simply clothing: we’re sharing warmth, humanity, and hope. I hope everyone will join in to make our community a place where everyone belongs.”

The ongoing initiative aims to address the increasing homelessness rates in Quebec, which are being exacerbated by inflation and the housing crisis. Renaissance’s press release highlights the importance of solidarity among organizations working to combat poverty and social exclusion.

Jaëlle Begarin, President and CEO of La Maison du Père, expressed appreciation for the community’s involvement: “The Wall of Kindness is a great example of community solidarity. Every year, I am deeply moved by citizens’ involvement in helping those whose situations are very precarious. Beyond this winter coat drive, the campaign helps to remind people that we are all vulnerable, and to break down prejudices. Your generosity can make a difference in someone’s life.”

To further boost donations and raise awareness, Montreal companies have been invited to participate in a friendly challenge. Businesses are encouraged to gather as many coats as possible, drop them off at one of the four designated walls, and share photos on social media using the hashtag #UnManteauALaFois.

This initiative not only provides warmth to those in need but also fosters a spirit of community and kindness throughout Montreal.
