Water usage in Calgary drops, but system still strained
Starting Thursday, a section of 16 Avenue N.W. will be closed for water main repair work.
Calgarians may be getting the message about water conservation, as usage saw a slight decrease on Wednesday.
According to the city's potable water demand dashboard, residents and businesses consumed 500 million litres of water.
This represents a reduction of six million litres from the previous day, although it remains at the threshold where the city reports that the water system is operating at its limit.
The City of Calgary stated on Tuesday that the water system can handle up to 485 million litres of daily usage while still keeping its pumps and infrastructure in good condition.
While up to 500 million litres can still be supplied, officials noted that this level of use strains equipment and complicates the process of filling underground water tanks.
Starting Thursday, a section of 16 Avenue N.W. will be closed for water main repairs.
The closure will extend from 46 Street N.W. to the Bowness Road interchange.
Traffic will be redirected to Bowness Road during the closure.
