Winter tire deadline around the corner
“I prefer a soft tire for better grip on ice and snow,” said Felix-Comeau, adding that Montreal’s heavy salting doesn’t negate the need for proper winter tires.
As the December 1 deadline for winter tire installation approaches in Quebec, Pneus Gordon in NDG is bustling, servicing an impressive 100 cars daily from Monday to Saturday. The garage has been fully booked since September, leaving last-minute planners scrambling for appointments.
Quebec law mandates that all vehicles registered in the province must have winter tires installed by December 1, with fines of up to $300 for non-compliance. The tires must remain on until at least March 15.
“There’s absolutely no way you can drive Montreal winters without winter tires,” said customer Kabir Kapoor. “Driving on icy roads with no winter tires is dangerous and susceptible to accidents.”
For Pneus Gordon, this period is predictably hectic. Sales Manager Alessandro Mancini described it as “chaotic” but manageable. “We’re prepared for it. It’s something we look forward to. Even though the days are busy, we get the job done.”
Mechanic Zach Felix-Comeau echoed this sentiment, noting that people often book months in advance. “We try to push out two to three cars an hour. It’s a rush year-round because people are always late.”
While the law is clear on deadlines, some drivers question its timing. “It’s odd they’ve moved up the dates since the weather’s gotten milder. Today, I’m changing my tires, but it’s raining and not that cold,” said customer Laura Cousineau.
The effectiveness of winter tires, however, isn’t just about snow. According to CAA, the rubber in all-season tires hardens below 7°C, reducing traction, while winter tires remain flexible, enhancing grip on icy roads.
“I prefer a soft tire for better grip on ice and snow,” said Felix-Comeau, adding that Montreal’s heavy salting doesn’t negate the need for proper winter tires.
With snow forecasted next week, including flurries on Thursday and Friday, many drivers are taking no chances. “I’ve had friends from places where winter tires aren’t required, and I always tell them Montreal’s not a great idea without them,” said Cousineau.
Kapoor offered simple advice for those still delaying: “Just put them on your car and drive safe. Come to Gordon’s.”
