Woman missing after mudslide in Coquitlam, B.C., found dead: RCMP
Police say the woman's home was washed away Saturday in a mudslide triggered by torrential rain
A woman reported missing after a mudslide swept away her home in Coquitlam, B.C., on Saturday has been found dead, police confirmed.
Coquitlam RCMP announced that a search and rescue team recovered the 57-year-old woman's body on Sunday evening.
"This is a deeply tragic outcome, and our thoughts are with the victim's family and friends," said Cpl. Alexa Hodgins in a statement on Monday.
The mudslide occurred along Quarry Road, near the southern edge of Pinecone Burke Provincial Park, with police responding around 12:30 p.m. PT on Saturday. The slide made the road impassable, isolating several residents in the area.
Coquitlam Fire Chief Scott Young told The Canadian Press that the slide had completely dislodged a home from its foundation.
The search efforts involved Canada Task Force 1, a national Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team, alongside Coquitlam Fire and Rescue personnel.
As of 11 a.m. PT Monday, Quarry Road remains closed between Calgary Drive and MacIntyre Road. Police confirmed that first responders are maintaining contact with the residents cut off by the slide.
