Workers from the DNRR safely removed a black bear from Dartmouth Commons
“We are pleased to report that DNR staff were able to successfully tranquilize the bear,” said department spokesperson Erin Lynch in an email.
A black bear spotted in a Dartmouth park has been safely removed.
According to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the bear was found in a tree at the Dartmouth Commons.
“We are pleased to report that DNR staff were able to successfully tranquilize the bear,” said department spokesperson Erin Lynch in an email.
“The bear landed on mattresses that were used to cushion its fall.”
Lynch noted that efforts are underway to relocate the bear to a “more appropriate” area.
The incident led police to advise people to stay away from the park, and nearby schools were put into lockdown as a precaution.
Lynch explained that as bears approach hibernation, they are driven to eat as much as possible to gain weight for the winter, which can lead them to search for easily accessible food like green bins and garbage cans.
